Roland Garros day 8

Yesterday at both the women’s and the men;s tournament, last years winner was ousted. While Nadal’s loss against Soderling was a giant upset, the loss of Ana Ivanovic against Victoria Azarenka was less of a surprise.

The scoreline between the number 9 seed Azarenka and the numer 8 Ivanovic was a clear one 6-2 6-3. Azarenka has been having a stellar year with as a crowning the win against Serena Williams in the Miami final this spring. Ivanovic has struggled tremendously since winner Roland Garros last year and just in recent weeks seemed to have gained some momentum back. Yesterday though, it wasn;t enough.

Azarenka had a great first serve percentage and Ivanovic had big trouble handling that. She lives of weak second serves that she can put away. Azarenka;’s powerful ground strokes kept Ivanovic on her toes and let her make many forced errors. The forehand, normally Ivanovic;s strong shot was totally off today. A deserved winner in Azarenka. Azarenka’s diva-like antics have made her not very popular with the audiences though. For her own sake I hope she tones it down a bit in the future.
