Wimbledon day 4
There were no real upsets yesterday at the women’s draw, but one of the more entertaining matches was the one between Australian’s Sam Stosur and Germany’s Tatjana Malek who defeated Aussie Jelena Dokic in the first round. While this certainly was not a high quality match, it most definitely made up for that in excitement with Stosur winning 4-6 7-6 6-4. Sam Stosur, the muscled multiple doubles slam winner came right from the best result of her career, a semi-final at Roland Garros. Her athleticism, great serve and excellent net play should make her a front runner at Wimbledon but so far this has never happened. Her forehand has a huge back swing and lots of topspin and that doesn’t translate well to the grass. Yesterday it was all about her though, and then mostly about the errors she made. Luckily for Stosur, Malek lacks real weapons and even with 4-0 in the tiebreak and 4-1 in the final set, she was still not able to win this match and Stosur has another chance of doing well at this year;’s Wimbledon. I guess it’s good for her to know she can win matches while playing awful.
